Yhdysvallat tarjoutui v\u00e4litt\u00e4j\u00e4ksi. Tilanne ei kuitenkaan mahdollistanut pyrkimysten eteenp\u00e4invienti\u00e4. \u00a0 Suomen hallituksen p\u00e4\u00e4t\u00f6s rauhaan pyrkimisest\u00e4 pidettiin pitk\u00e4\u00e4n salassa. T\u00e4st\u00e4 syyst\u00e4 syntyi samaan p\u00e4\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4\u00e4n pyrkinyt, mutta hallitusta vastustanut ryhmittym\u00e4, niin sanottu rauhanoppositio. Siihen kuului henkil\u00f6it\u00e4 useimmista puolueista.<\/p>\n<p>Elokuussa 1943 yhteens\u00e4 33 julkisuuden henkil\u00f6\u00e4 allekirjoitti vetoomuksen erillisrauhan puolesta. Kirjelm\u00e4ss\u00e4 vaadittiin uutta ulkopoliittista suuntausta. Kirjelm\u00e4 p\u00e4\u00e4si julkisuuteen ensin Ruotsissa ja vasta sen j\u00e4lkeen Suomessa. Oppositio sai tukea Ruotsista ja l\u00e4nsivalloista. Suomen poliittinen johto pyrki puolestaan korostamaan yhteisymm\u00e4rryst\u00e4. Sis\u00e4isen rintaman murtuminen olisi heikent\u00e4nyt mahdollisuuksia rauhanneuvotteluissa.<\/p>\n<p>Saksan jatkuvat tappiot johtivat siihen, ett\u00e4 ylip\u00e4\u00e4llikk\u00f6 C. G. Mannerheim totesi 6.2.1944 hallituksen j\u00e4senille Saksan h\u00e4vinneen sodan my\u00f6s Neuvostoliittoa vastaan. Neuvostoliittoon otettiin yhteytt\u00e4 Ruotsin kautta. Neuvostoliiton rauhanehdot olivat kohtuuttomat.
